Summary:
Mrs. LaRue sends her dog, Ike, to obedience school because he has behavior problems. Ike writes Mrs. LaRue every day and tells her how bad it is and tries to get her to come take him home. Ike makes up all the horrible things that he tells Mrs, LaRue about Obedience school and runs away on the tenth day of "incarceration." He goes to America, still writing Mrs. LaRue, and decides that the place that he really wants to be is home with Mrs. LaRue, so he returns home. When he arrives in town, he sees Mrs. LaRue crossing the street with a truck barreling down towards her and he pushes her out of the way. Mrs. LaRue throws a welcome home party for Ike with all his favorite dishes.
Recommendations and Conflicts:
I recommend this as a classroom book for first and second grade teachers. The conflict I see in this book is that Ike lies about his situation, runs away, and then is rewarded.
Reaction:
I enjoyed reading this book and being able to look at the pictures and seeing the difference in the words in the letters and what is actually happening in the story.
